It’s finally happened. Barbara has turned me completely to the light side. I’m now officially a bleeding-heart, tree-hugging, recycling, enviromentalist, open-minded liberal.
I don’t remember when it started…I have to give her credit for the insidiousness of her operation. It’s progressed over the years, up until Lily was born and she convinced me to go with cloth diapers. Cloth diapers…didn’t they go out of vogue in the caveman days? And then, again, with cloth wipes. We don’t buy household cleaners anymore, we roll our own. We have resusable rags for cleaning and have severely curtailed our usage of paper towels. We (usually) take our own reuseable bags to the supermarket. We patronize farmer’s markets.
Now, I may be off base here, and correct me if I’m wrong, but when I became a full-fledged member of hippie commune, wasn’t I supposed to get a complimentary pair of birkenstocks and an introduction to the secret handshake?
She’s done her recruiting with a Master’s skill, you see. For no longer is it just my going along with her idea to go green. Now I find myself doing it on my own…taking my own initiative. This morning I cleaned off all my desk and made a pile of paper to recycle. Then, I got to thinking about how much paper I waste on a weekly basis and realized that I should really try to do something about that.
I’m kinda forgetful, so I’ll jot down notes on a pad, then forget where I put the pad, and end up jotting notes on a new one. No lie, I cleaned up six pads today. I installed Dropbox on my PC last week, and I just installed Evernote this morning. Although I’ve tried it before and failed, I’m going to see if I can gear up to going at least 90% paperless in my normal work/home day. None of my information is super secret, so I don’t mind that it’s in “the cloud” and with regular backups, I can ensure that my data doesn’t disappear if one of the services goes tits up.
I have to admit though, it sure is nice saving money on things that we’d normally throw out. We use a lot less consumable paper at home since the introduction of cloth diapers/wipes and more organic cleaning supplies. With the economy in the state its in, every little bit helps.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go weave my own baskets…
